Without gold, Alibaba is virtually a guaranteed failure. With it, he is a gem sink.
One of the missions requires sending out Alibaba. Because of this, the best plan is to save the starting gold for sending Alibaba out once, then ignore him until gems are plentiful - which may mean forever.
Alternatively, you can go to a friend's shop and forge for Alibaba there. It will count towards your quest goal.
